Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic tool using the best from a number of schools of thought to provide a bespoke, personalised service to those who use it. It has it's basis in Hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), but also uses techniques from CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and Positive Psychology, amongst other approaches. It is, a blend of the best of many types of therapies, used to support the changes you want to make. There is no 'one size fits all'. We are all different and we engage with our issues in an individual way. To give you a simple example. If I ask you to look at a colour and tell me what you see - you may say blue. I may agree that it is blue, but I cannot know that the blue you see and the blue I see are the same. It is often the same with emotions. I might say I am angry, you may be too - but it doesn't necessarily mean it is the same for both of us. Therefore, when you book an appointment with me, the first thing we will do is to help us both to understand what is going on for you. That way, we can better help you to unpick the problem and re-wire it as a solution.
Some people worry that if they are using Hypnotherapy, trance states, they are not in control.
The interesting thing is that we are in trance more than we are out of it. Have you ever driven somewhere that you drive regularly and got there without really knowing how?
That is a trance state. As is, getting really involved in the plot of a book or a film.
You know that moment when you jump at something in a scary film? That is because you have suspended this world, to enter another.
You are still completely in control of your thoughts and feelings - you are just in the 'watching the film trance'. It happens all the time.
When we work together we are often looking to influence the unconscious mind.
Our unconscious, some term it subconscious - both terms are the same, is there to protect us and generally it does an excellent job.
However, sometimes it protects you in a way that is less than helpful.
Perhaps it is still using solutions from when you were a child.
It worked well, hopefully, for you as a 5 year old, but probably isn't helpful as an adult. However, but understanding the positive intent of the strategy it is using we can in effect re-programme it to respond differently, in a more supporting and nurturing way.
People generally have all the resources they need to overcome the difficulties they are experiencing.
Sometimes they have just got trapped in certain behaviour patterns and need help to find the route to the solutions.
This we can do together in a way that is sustainable so that issues are gone for good. We are not necessarily looking for a fast solution.
We are looking for the fastest, most permanent solution.
